A feeling of unrest wakes me up
at 4:00 AM and won’t let me go back to sleep. My
stomach growls demanding food. I dress and
drive myself to the Blue Lyon Diner. This
restaurant is a special place. It has been in
existence longer than anyone living remembers.
It keeps its doors open always and serves
breakfast any time of the day. I sit down at the
counter and order. My food arrives quickly. Just
as I dig into my porterhouse steak and eggs
plate, I hear someone come up to me.
“Hey, partner,” a large, rugged, blue-jeanned and cowboy-
booted man says as he eases his posterior onto a stool.
I turn my head and nod without saying anything. My breakfast
companion is Eddie Sobaleff, a local sheriff’s detective. I know
him slightly.
He, too, orders the porterhouse steak and eggs. We eat in
silence for a while.
“Are you that crazy reporter son of a bitch who writes abut
aliens, parallel universes, demons, and other crap like that?”
he asks.
“Yes.”
“I don’t read trash like yours usually. But your story about an
Inland Empire vampire is all true,” he says and looks me in the
eyes. His pale blue peepers sparkle with a smile while his face
sports a deep frown.
Since I have nothing to say to him, I say nothing and finish up
my porterhouse.
Det. Sobaleff finishes his plate too and gets up. He looks me in
the eyes again and puts a computer disc on the counter.
“Write about this. This is your kind of stuff,” he says and leaves
the diner.
I take the disc home and insert it into my laptop. The feeling of
unrest disappears. The Detective is right; this is my kind of stuff.
